Have you ever had a free plane ticket and had no idea where to go? Well after getting stuck in Atlanta last year from a cancelled flight and driving home with 5 strangers at 1 am (that’s another story), I was given a few free vouchers and so our Tulum trip was born. There is just something so rejuvenating about putting your toes in the sand and being able to let the sun kiss your skin in the wintertime. I love Mexico because people and the service is so friendly, it’s fairly easy to get to, it’s often a cheaper vacation destination, and they have lots of chips and guac!!
We chose Tulum because it’s not as popular as Cancun or the Riviera Maya and it’s only a few minutes further. Justin and I are a bit adventurous so we typically rent a car so we can do more and see more. It took about an hour and a half to drive from the airport to the hotel and it was straight highway. Next time I might rent a jeep so we can enjoy the weather with the top down!
With each vacation we take, I love an experience and Azulik is nothing short of that! It’s like waking up in a giant treehouse…..but with plumbing! The views are like nothing you’ve ever seen and the staff is nothing short of amazing. We were lucky enough to stay in an ocean front room fully equipped with a giant swing hung over a hot tub and the entire room is fully lit by candlelight at night. Azulik Tulum is extremely eco friendly so they fully promote the use of unplugging LITERALLY lol. There is only ONE (you heard me) outlet…..don’t even try to blow-dry your hair because I just about burned mine off. I used it to charge my cell phone and that’s about it, but honestly Mexico has other plans for my hair anyway so why even fight it, embrace the fro ladies.
There are a plethora of restaurants near the hotel, but honestly they had such good food and restaurants there that you don’t really need to leave. My favorite was Kin Toh, which sits at the top of the resort overlooking the property with several larger than life hammocks to lounge in. It’s both terrifying and breathtaking to be lounging hundreds of feet above. My second favorite meal we had was getting room service. Each room has 2 round balls with enough room inside for a small piece of paper. You write what you would like to eat on the paper, put it inside the ball and drop it in a small hole just outside of your door. Then it traveled through pipes much like a Rube Goldberg machine reaching its way to the kitchen, hits a gong and 30 minutes later staff delivers your breakfast! If that’s not cool, I’m not sure what is!!!!
Azulik Tulum was a breath of fresh air; the staff and service will do anything in their power to make you feel at home. They have staff called “Angels” who can help you with anything you can think of like dinner plans, island excursions, etc. Helpful tip: we always ask a local for their favorite restaurants and music spots, this way you really get to immerse into the culture and aren’t surrounded by tourists. It usually ends up being our favorite spots! Case in point the Cenotes. Cenotes are natural sinkholes filled with water. These secret swimming holes have the most vibrant colors and their exclusivity made it the highlight of our trip!! One of my other favorite Tulum day trips was to see the Mayan Ruins. They were only 2 miles from where we stayed and it was incredible to try and piece together what Tulum looked like a millennium ago. This fascinating historic seaport is worth checking out!
If you have any questions at all , I’d love to hear from you and would be happy to offer any other helpful advice for your trip to Azulik Tulum!!
